Your sales letter should grab a visitor’s attention, prove you provide a solution, remove risk, state a call to action, and hopefully (if done well) generate a sale.

Your main header, also referred to as a H1 tag, can:

o Invoke curiosity. “Can Broccoli Prevent Hair Loss?”

o Include keywords.

Your subheaders will follow the same format as your header. These two work best when they attack the reader from two different angles. Your headline could invoke curiosity, while the sub-headline makes a bold claim like this “Now You Can Re-grow Your Hair… Without Chemicals!”

Highlight Your Unique Selling Proposition

This is where you subtly demonstrate to your reader that your competition sucks. To do this, examine your competitor’s sales letters, noting the benefits they offer- and more importantly, those they lack. Even if the two of you are selling the same product, you can position your offer in very different ways. Are they offering a money back guarantee? Do they fail to cover a specific topic that your explain in detail? Discover your competitor’s weaknesses and demonstrate them to your prospects… Chances are, your prospects will shop around before committing, and it pays to plant the seeds of doubt in their minds about your competitors. Remember that subtlety is the key; you don’t want to smear yourself as well!

Focus on Benefits, Not Features

Don’t rattle off the features of your product; explain to your prospect how they will benefit from it. For example, if you’re selling air conditioners, people aren’t interested in the features (e.g. voltage, wattage, what type of plastic it’s made of, etc.) they want to keep cool during summer!

To ensure you’re listing benefits instead of features, ask yourself “How does this feature help my prospect?” List your features, then add the word “which” after it: whatever follows is a benefit. For example:

o Low power requirements, which lowers your energy bill.

o New polymer plastic casing, which cools your house faster than traditional models.

o Timer setting, which saves you the hassle of getting up in the middle of the night to turn it off.

I’ve heard this phrase so many times I practically recite it in my sleep, and yet, so many people forget this simple law of copywriting. Bullet points tend to work best in sales letters, as they are easily scanned by readers. Keep in mind that your prospects aren’t interested in every single benefit your product offers, just the ones that apply to them. By listing off dozens of benefits, you are increasing the likelihood your prospects will come across one or two main benefits they are most interested in, and buy your product.

Include Testimonials

My wife and I were on Ko Phi Phi Island in Thailand (where the movie “The Beach” was filmed) getting ready to grab a bite. While looking at a map, a couple of guys came up to us and recommended a restaurant saying, “This is the best restaurant we’ve been to on the island. You should check it out.”

Guess where we went for dinner?

We didn’t personally know these guys, yet we trusted them. This demonstrates what is known as social proof – people making decisions based on someone else’s experience. If you’re interested in something and you see that it has worked for others, you are more likely to trust them and-case in point- buy it. Testimonials are a great way to demonstrate social proof to your prospects; they can see for themselves that your product works and provides value to real people without you forcing it down there throats. Rather than singing your own praises, why not let your satisfied customers do it for you?

Here’s two ways to gather testimonials:

1. When you’re first testing your product (that is, the product you haven’t created yet) ask people you know personally if they can provide testimonials citing your expertise in a specific area applicable to your product.

2. Once you create and sell your product, follow up with the customer via email and ask for a testimonial. Here’s what I use:

Make sure to include a personal email address you check frequently in order to stay on top of testimonials as they come in.

People Don’t Buy Products… They Buy Offers

Your offer is the presentation; if your prospects don’t like the presentation they won’t even try your product. This is why creating a solid offer is imperative for your system‘s success.

So what makes a good offer? Here are the key components you of a dynamite offer:

Have Quality Digital Cover

If you’re creating an information product that includes several downloadable CDs, create a professional looking digital CD cover for each disc. If you have an e-book or special report, create covers for those as well. Be sure to include screenshots of the content as well, which should be professionally formatted.

Include Video Demos

Videos are a great tool for marketing your product and should be used where possible- I’ve used video demos for several products with great success. The process is simple: use Camtasia to record you demonstrating your product while explaining its benefits, then upload the video to YouTube and embed the code they give you onto your website. We’ll talk about video marketing more in a bit.

Offer an Exceptional Guarantee

The main function of a guarantee is to remove all risk for your prospect. You want to make a guarantee so strong they’d feel like a fool for not buying your product. For example, you could offer a 60 day money back guarantee, and allow them to keep all the bonuses even if they decide to cancel. Another method is to allow your prospect to download your product for one dollar, and then charge their credit card the remainder seven days later if they don’t cancel.

Build Trust

When I receive emails from people asking me “Is this for real?” I know it’s time to build a higher level of trust with our prospects. Be sure to include links to your privacy policy, contact information and a brief bio about yourself.

Buy a P.O. Box at your local post office and use that as your mailing address. Forty bucks a year provides peace of mind; you don’t want your home address advertised to hundreds of thousands of people, right?

It’s always better to include a phone number as well. You can leave your personal number, or get a redirect line through Skype or Vonage. If you receive lot of calls, consider signing up with a call center that will take messages and accept payments (there’s a list of them at the end of this book).


Including a bio is a great opportunity for you to sell yourself and build trust amongst readers, many of whom want to know a little about a person before doing business with them. Bios typically include the following elements:

o Special Achievements

o Personal Information (e.g. city of residence and family information)

o Picture

All of these are completely optional and depend on your comfort level with sharing information online. internet. There is a fine line between highlighting your knowledge, skills, and achievements and coming off as a blowhard. Remember: the point is to build trust, hopefully to the point of getting a sale.

Offer Bonuses

Once you’ve demonstrated your product provides value and removed risk with a strong guarantee, push your prospects off the fence with a few value packed bonuses. The bonus is all about perceived value; many people in fact buy products for the bonuses themselves! If you’re offering an e-book on Cajun cooking, offer a video that demonstrates how to make roux, and several other Cajun sauces. How about recipes for cocktails that are famous in the South? A list of the best restaurants in New Orleans? All of these are easy to create and dramatically improve the value of your product.


Let’s say your prospects sign up for a free two week course on southern cooking. They are then presented with an offer to buy the full product. If they haven’t purchased it, they receive another e-mail, but with a twist: this could be a reduced price, an added bonus, or the chance to pay in installments.

State a P.S.

Believe it or not, many people will scroll to the bottom of a sales page first. I do it all the time… once I know I’m on a sales page, the first question that comes to mind is “How much?”

This is precisely why you shouldn’t list your price at the bottom of your sales letter. Instead, use a P.S., or just another headline that reinforces your value proposition. Rather than asking “How much?” they’ll scroll up to learn more about your offer.

This sales letter example should help you craft a profitable sales letter in as little as a week. Write a draft and sit on it for a few days so you can see it with fresh eyes.

How to Make More Money As a CNA

The other day a co-worker told me about her salary journey as a CNA. After completing her CNA classes she immediately started to look for a job and was a little shocked to see that the pay rates were surprisingly low. But she was confident and decided that she wanted to be a CNA not primarily because of the salary, but in order to help others and hoped that with more experience her salary would go up. Now it is five years later and her CNA salary has indeed increased, however, not as much she’d have liked. In my opinion, it really is a huge problem for many CNA who put their heart and time into this demanding job and the income doesn’t increase much with time. Therefore, here are four options to help you maximize the money you can make as CNA.

Location, Location, Location

Do you know that the starting pay of a CNA varies widely between different states? According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics CNA earn an average annual salary of $24,190 or $11.63 per hour (2011 data). However, depending on the state you work in the actual salary could be $23,500 (in Iowa) or $32,000 (in New York) or anywhere in-between. Therefore, if you are mobile and want to travel you stand a good chance to increase your salary as a CNA simply by moving to a different state.

Unfortunately, there is a catch. The cost of living in or near New York is notably higher than the cost of living in Iowa. Thus, although your income can be 35% higher in New York, you might end up having less in the bank after rent, taxes and food. However, though they may be an expensive states to live in – who wouldn’t desire to move to New York City or Hawaii?

Consider that if you move to another state, you also have to transfer your CNA license. To do so visit the website of the state’s Nurse’s Aide Registry and find out how you can transfer your license to this state. Alternatively, in case you are still thinking of becoming a CNA and want to explore the United States, You can also move to your preferred state after your initial training and obtain the CNA license there directly. It saves time and money.

Not All Work Settings Are Equal

With a CNA license you can find work in numerous settings. You could start in nursing facilities, community care facilities, hospitals, or possibly even as a home health aide. Depending on the place you go the salary can be quite different.

Nursing Homes

Many certified nursing assistants have told me that the salary in long term care facilities is typically not as high as that in hospitals. The difference is not excessive, but it is there. However, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider working in a nursing home. It is a great place to start your career. In addition, there are other opportunities to raise your income even without a change in your pay rate. There is for example a weekend differential and time and a half for call-in and usually 2x the regular rate for shifts on major holidays. Because many nursing facilities are tight with staffing you may as well have the opportunity snatch up extra hours, which can substantially improve your salary as a CNA.

Community Care Facilities

Community Care Facilities are like long term care facilities, but depending on their license status often house patients with less need for personal care than nursing home patients. It is therefore a good option if you’re looking to dedicate most of your energy towards the individual patient, but it also has a pay that is about $1 per hour lower than that in long term care facilities.


To many the hospital is the most exciting place to be as a CNA. It opens a range of opportunities as a result of the large variety of work settings. For example, it is possible to work in the maternity unit, the medical/surgical floor or emergency room. But hospital work is not just exciting, it is also rewarding money-wise. Generally hospitals pay the highest CNA salary. As an added bonus you can also gain a lot of experience within a short time period, which can help greatly to negotiate a salary increase in your next job.

Home Health Aide

You know, there’s misconception around that a CNA can earn up to $20 hourly by working for private-paying clients. This is certainly true in some lucky cases, but not for the majority. The reason is that this amount of money typically is only paid for supervised home health, which means there must be a registered nurse that takes care of the patient and supervises your work. In this case the agency makes the $20 per hour of which she pays $11, something to the nurse and keeps the rest.

You may still work directly with the client, but only if your care is “unskilled”, meaning that you aren’t caring so much for the patient’s health, but the household. The going rate for this particular position is typically less than $20 per hours and needs no certification ($18 per hours is high). It’s also work difficult to find.

Instead you can arrange to work as a CNA through a home health agency. It will be relatively easy to actually find work because your CNA license requires more training than that of a home health aide. Your education provides an edge. Pay rates tend to be below those in hospitals, but they can come with the advantage that you care for just one patient at a time instead of many. So when you really want to take care of your patients this is a great way to start.

And you could even be able to do something regarding your income. Some agencies cover the cost of the gas needed to drive to your client. This increases your pay and is also tax-free. For instance, if you make $100 per month on gas payment then your corresponding salary value is roughly $125 since you don’t pay taxes. Agencies also pay 1.5x for over time and may be open to pay more when a case needs to be filled urgently.


Experience certainly helps. When a friend of mine started to work her salary was really low, however the contract she had with her employer guaranteed a raise each year due to her increased experience. When she finally left her job to search for another one her salary had gone up by $2 hourly because she already had several years of experience in multiple work settings.

For this reason it pays to work in various settings in your work place (e.g. hospital) or accept a diverse mix of cases when you’re in home health. Also ask your employer if they pay for continuing education courses – something that will most certainly look nice on your resume.


Lastly, don’t forget to consider the perks. I stated earlier how getting money for gas can get you a great 5% – 10% salary increase. But there are more options such as matching 401k (the employer contributes to your 401k the same amount of money you put in), insurance options, over time pay and paid vacation. Thus, when you search for your very first job right after you completed your CNA training it will help to interview with several potential employers and have a closer look at the offer they provide you with. There can be perks in the details that significantly improve your income.

Overcoming Client Objections to Social Media

Whether you’re a social media guru with fifteen years of experience or the new digital marketing wizard on the block, we all hear the same objections from potential clients regarding the incorporation of social media (SM) into their marketing plan.

“Too much of a time suck.” This, of course, is my most favorite objection. Yes, one can be easily sucked into the productivity black hole that is SM. Particularly someone who is inexperienced and not using the proper tools to curate content, gain followers, or automate their updates. Social media is time-consuming and difficult — which is why you are outsourcing this unpleasant but necessary marketing task to a SM specialist like yours, truly.

“I’m afraid of the negative comments.” This is a popular objection, and somewhat valid — if you don’t see it for the golden opportunity it is. Let’s get real — customers will post about your company whether you’re on SM or not. Wouldn’t you prefer to professionally address those concerns in a public forum, where your other followers can see a live example of your excellent customer service skills in action? It’s a valuable opportunity to demonstrate your professionalism and sophistication.

“We’re already on Facebook.” Sure. So is the rest of the world, including your competition. And your competitors are actively engaging with their customers and with potential customers — plus they’re seeking out NEW customers on Twitter, Pinterest, Google+ and Instagram. They even have a YouTube video with 32,000 views. And don’t get me started on their blog! Facebook is great, don’t get me wrong. But it’s not Field of Dreams, people. You must actively seek out followers, create/curate content that is valuable to them, and engage with them a few times a day. Over several platforms. Facebook shouldn’t be a business’ only SM face.

“It takes too long to see results.” This is true. Absolute truth. SM marketing is a marathon, not a sprint. Your clients will NOT see results overnight. It’s a long-term investment, not a short-term strategy. It takes a consistent presence to build trust. These are relationships you are building. Relationships take time and energy to grow strong. The time and energy spent on building a credible reputation through social media is well worth it, if it means converting those relationships into lifelong customers.

“I can do all of this in-house.” As SM consultants, we all know how many hours are spent handling the digital marketing for our clients, and how much technical know-how is required. This objection is usually sub-text for, “we can’t afford social media consulting”. That said, our clients certainly could attempt handling SM in-house. Of course, they would need to know about marketing strategy, they would need technical expertise, access to the latest social media tools, and knowledge of all the latest social media offerings. However. SM management is not a task you should be handing off to an intern. SM is the VOICE of your company. It’s worth every penny to outsource your SM to someone who is experienced, competent, and above all — committed to moving your brand toward its goals and objectives.

“Social Media is for kids.” Whenever I get this objection, I know right away that this is a potential client who doesn’t use SM and might never understand the true value of this marketing medium. If they WERE on social media, then they would know that Facebook’s largest demographic are users between the ages of 35-54. Their fastest growing demographic are users over 55. Most of LinkedIn’s users are 30-49. Twitter and Instagram’s users are mostly 18-29. If your client’s product is intended for geriatric patients or is a nursing home or retirement community, then maybe social media wouldn’t be their first choice for marketing. But ‘kids’ are consumers, too. And sometimes, the decision-makers for the older population IS using social media. Something to consider.

“I’m using Yellow Pages instead of social media.” Social Media can allow a much more modest investment with the chance to suggest the benefits of your product or services without your competitors being on the same page, AND with a much broader reach, provided the proper SEO is in place. With the rising cost of Yellow Page ads and listings, the money would be much better spent building a customer following through SM outlets. For a smaller investment, you could build and design entire campaigns, rather than trying to fit everything you need to say to potential customers in a 2×2 ad.

For me, using SM as part of business’ marketing effort is a no-brainer. If you can overcome these objections, perhaps you can convince your potential clients of the value of social media, too!

10 Ways to Make Money With Body Painting

Are you considering making a living (or at least a little money on the side) doing body painting? Is it even possible to make a living doing body painting? Yes, you can make good money as a ‘pro’ body painter, and even kids as young as twelve have made good money (like $500-$400 in an afternoon) doing simple painting techniques like airbrushed temporary tattoos at fairs and festivals.

It may be difficult to believe that there are so many different ways to make money doing body painting. I know that when I first discovered the art of body painting, I thought maybe you could make some temporary money at a party or fair. But there are many, many more possibilities, as you will see.

Here are just 10 of the ways you could get paid to do body painting:

1. Doing body painting at parties. You could hire yourself for a night or a day and get paid either by the hour or a flat fee for the event.

2. Painting party-goers before they go to a party or event. Themed or holiday parties would be a good opportunity for this. Make sure you mention that you could body paint their friends, too!

3. As a professional body painter for the theatre. You could do one show for a discount to get in the door and get some recognition, if you don’t have a track record yet.

4. Travel with the circus as their ‘in house’ makeup artist.

5. Become the official body painter for a dance company. Again, you could work for a low fee or even free to get in the door.

6. Face painting alone opens up several opportunities: parties, festivals, fairs, and special events all are possible places for you to set up shop. Just make sure (as with all these options) that you are using proper, non-allergenic paints meant for face painting alone.

7. Special events like graduations, celebrations, fundraisers, and reunions.

8. Sports events: painting fans in their team colors and symbols has had a long tradition.

9. Festivals around the world. There are several festivals specifically for body painting around the world, but there are many more that would be a great place for body painting. Look up the festivals in your area and find out how to become a vendor and what their requirements and rules are.

10. Teach others how to do body painting. You could hold a one-time workshop, give ongoing group classes or even do an online body painting course (as I am doing).

Smoothie King got its start back in 1987 when Steve and Cindy Kuhnau began creating health drinks in hopes that they would aide Steve’s allergy problems. Having a nursing background, he felt that by eliminating fats from his diet and focusing on higher protein foods and drinks he might experience some relief from his symptoms. His drink creations were initially sold out of their health food store but as they grew in popularity, a new business opportunity, Smoothie King, was born. They began franchising in 1988 and have seen steady expansion every since. In 2009, a year when most food-service franchises were hit with a down turn, the Smoothie King franchise increased to over 550 franchise units in the United States and another 56 internationally. They are currently seeking new franchisees worldwide and they do not offer exclusive territories.

The Smoothie King franchise is still run by its original founders and is headquartered in Covington, Louisiana. Stores sell various vitamins, healthy snacks, and supplements in addition to smoothies. The growing trend of healthier, faster snacks is fueling the Smoothie King success over the past few years and they have plans for continued growth in 2010. The franchise fee is $25,000 and the estimated start up costs range from $140,400 to $329,500 depending upon location. There is also a 6% ongoing royalty fee. At this level, Smoothie King probably does not qualify as a “low cost” franchise opportunity, but it is close enough to warrant mention in the same context as many of the franchises coming in below the $100,000 startup mark. A minimum net worth of $100,000 is required by a new franchisee with at least $50,000 being liquid capital. Smoothie King does not provide any type of financing but they do allow third party financing.

It is estimated that the average Smoothie King franchise requires 9-11 employees and absentee ownership is allowed. Approximately 60% of all franchisees own more than one location, a fact that must be considered when deciding on entering into this opportunity. It is not uncommon that multiple locations are necessary for a franchisee to see any significant type of profit. The parent company provides training at the corporate headquarters and at the franchisee’s location and also directs a 14 day management training course at company headquarters. Continued support is provided via co-op advertising, newsletters, meetings, internet, and phone.

The Smoothie King franchise appears to be moving in the right direction, but it does require a significant investment and financial risk to get started. There may be other business opportunities that offer a similar return on investment with a must smaller risk. I would suggest exploring all options, including internet based businesses, before starting this venture.

There are two simple factors making themselves clear here: An outstanding product and a rising global trend in both network marketing and health & wellness. Undoubtedly, both the scientists and the founders of Max International hold high credentials. These would be people deep in-the-know about what they are doing. It should be mentioned though, that there is no requirement for own auto-ship of MaxOne as an associate, but it may take a big leap of faith for many to jump in with MaxOne as a Preferred Customer with a monthly supply at the cost of $75 for US and Singapore hitting $99/month. A new Max Loyalty Program has recently been implemented though with savings of 25% on a minimum 3 months auto-ship of MaxOne or their other products. A good example of the qualified leadership capable of taking wise action.

MaxOne, NAC and The Most Important Astrocyte Cells

In regards to the price we must surely take into consideration that there is really not much, if anything, out there that can match MaxOne in both effective and safe delivery of glutathione to the body. Not only quantitatively, as to how much is needed in daily intake, but qualitatively as well in regards to the unique delivery mechanism of MaxOne, that for instance is known to penetrate into the important star-shaped astrocyte cells, abundantly found throughout the central nervous system, and to increase cell proliferation (division) in those, unlike its competitor N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC) that actually decreases proliferation of the astrocyte cells! Well, I am sure there are people “everywhere”, in all countries at least, that can afford MaxOne, but they are still an elite and not what one perhaps understands underlying “helping people everywhere”. But it does sound good.

… At a Closing Note

The fact remains that despite the importance and significance of glutathione in the medical industry, as justified by the staggering amount of studies on it, glutathione is still not well-known in the health supplements industry – simply because none of the glutathione-based products have produced any noticeable results for users! Will MaxOne change the course of history in regards to glutathione supplementation?

How to Start an Online Clothing Store in 12 Steps

This article is meant to be a very rough outline in the process of starting up an e-commerce based clothing store or boutique. In the high-paced and competitive world of fashion retail setting up your store is just the first step and quite honestly has little bearing on how successful your store will actually be. For example, Bluefly.com has an estimated monthly traffic of 840K, but since going public in 1998 has never made a single year of profit. As of December 31, 2009, Bluefly has an accumulated deficit of $147,468,000. Your guess on how they remain in business is as good as mine, but think of it this way. Even if you only make $1.00 of profit your first year of business, then you are technically doing better than Bluefly.

Please note, many of these steps can be done concurrently. For example, while you are filing your legal forms, you can work on your web design. This is especially true if you are depending on a third-party to design and set-up your website. They may work on a longer time frame than you initially anticipated. I do highly suggest that you just focus on the business plan initially. For example, if you decide that you are going to design your website with a specific concept while you write your business plan, then you just might find after researching that your concept is not what you’re going to move forward with. In this case, you probably spent 40-60 hours on non-productive output.

1. Write a business plan.

To be honest with you, when my girlfriend and I launched our website, we did not have a business plan, but we did write one eventually. The simple fact is that if you are planning for success, then you must write a business plan sooner or later. In business school, you write it sooner than later. The business plan is important because it forces you to do research about the industry, your competitors, and your resources. Additionally, it forces you to think deeply about how you are going to succeed in this highly competitive industry. If you think that you are going to be just like Modcloth, then why would you expect to be successful compared to Modcloth when they are working with millions of dollars of venture capitalist funds for a workforce, marketing, inventory, etc. I don’t have an answer for you, but my point is that you have to come up with a plan before investing your life’s savings into this new venture. Also, the business plan is important because it also forces you to estimate how much money you will need and where that many is coming from. The reality is that unless you have real background in finance, you will not be able to build a 5-10 year projected Discounted Cash Flow Model and figure out your WACC, but having some kind of rough idea of your cash flow is better than nothing.

You should also include a plan on how you are going to initially set-up your website. For example, using a subscription-based shopping cart will change your budget than if you decide to use an open-source shopping cart. Also, you should also do your initial research on web hosting companies since they can range from $10/month to over $300/month. My only suggestion is that you get the fastest and most reliable that your budget will allow. Please note, that all I’m suggesting is that you plan what you are going to do as far as web design and hosting is concerned, not that you go out and pay for these services right now. The only expense that you may want to consider at this moment is that for registering a domain name. That’s because they are relatively inexpensive to register and you don’t want to possibly miss out on registering your wanted domain.

You should come up with a budget and plan for marketing, public relations, and search engine optimization. These will most likely be your largest expense heading into the future. Remember, buying inventory is not an expense, it is an asset.

Last, but not least, you also want to plan on order fulfillment. This is just a fancy way of saying how you are going to pack and send your product, as well as what return procedure and policy you will have in place. Will you use USPS, UPS, FedEx, or DHL? Will you have free shipping, returns, and/or exchanges? These are all things that should be planned for, though will change over time.

2. Apply for a Employer Identification Number with the IRS

Once again, if you are planning for success in the future, then you are going to have to run your business legally. You will need an EIN to open a bank account, apply for a business license, and get a seller’s permit. Just search “EIN” in the Google search engine and the IRS website should be the first result. When applying for your EIN, you will need to know the legal structure of your business. For example, if your business is going to be a one man or woman show, then you are going to apply as a sole proprietor. If it turns out that you and your mom are going to run the business, then you may choose partnership or decide to incorporate.

Pick your fictitious business name, “Doing Business As,” and file it with your county clerk

One of the more exciting step in setting up your business will always be picking a name. My girlfriend and chose T.I.L. Darling because before we were officially a couple, she would tell me that in Thailand, her home country, that she and I could never go out alone as even friends. I told her, “This is London, Darling.” So, I guess our business name should technically be T.I.L., Darling, to be more grammatically correct. Once you have your fictitious business name, you need to make a pretty good attempt to make sure no one else is using that same name. Otherwise, years down the line when you are making money, you can expect a letter from a lawyer saying how they are going to sue the designer pants off of you.

If your county registrar/clerk has a website with downloadable forms, then search for the DBA filing form, fill it out, and bring it to the county clerk. Otherwise, you will just have to do everything in person. There, you will probably have your first business expense with the filing fee. Your second expense will be the requirement that you advertise your new business name in an approved newspaper or public publication so that if anyone has a problem with your DBA then they can step forward. The county clerk will be able to point you in the right direction for this step.

3. Open a business bank account

Again, planning for future success, you will want to open up a separate bank account for your business. This way, you can track and easily separate business expenses from your personal expenses, write checks or have transactions under your business name, and just generally feel like a real business.

4. Start designing and setting up your website

There are actually a few methods of going forward with your website. I will explore a few options starting from the most costly to the least costly. Even though I would have to question whether or not running an online business if for you, but if you have extremely limited experience with web design or are just not internet savvy, then you may need to do everything third-party. If you realize that you’re going to need someone to design your website, initially set-up your domain and site, then you will probably need to find some kind of subscription based shopping cart. For example, if you have money to spend, then search “boutiquecommerce” in the Google search engine. This company will do just about everything for you, from web design, domain registration, web hosting, to ongoing support. There are many third-party shopping carts fitting almost any budget. To be honest, I have no experience with any paid or subscription based shopping cart and so I will limit any opinion I have on them.

Another alternative is to buy a website template designed on top of an open-source (free) shopping-cart platform. Search “templatemonster” in the Google search engine. Filter your search to include E-Commerce templates and choose “fashion” as your category, though you can customize any template to your needs in reality.

On a side note, before you purchase your template, you should set-up your server. During your business plan research, you should have figured out what web host fits best for you, but now is the time to actually spend some money because you will not be able to test your template unless you have a server to upload it to. This also means that if you haven’t done so already, then you will have to finally register your domain name, which is something you should have also figured out in your business plan. Most web hosts will actually register your domain for free, but feel free to use a service, such as godaddy, and you’ll need to change the namerservers to point to your web host.

Once you have your template and web host, then you need to upload your template and start customizing it. You can either use a “template tuning” service or if you have enough html, php, and photoshop experience, then you can do it yourself. Unfortunately, this step can be pretty difficult even for somewhat internet savvy users because this is where you will need to learn a little bit about setting up a database, setting up a database user, and how to use an FTP program to upload your site. That’s why some may opt to use a third-party shopping cart, but this option is by far the most flexible and cheapest if you have the time and are willing to learn.

You will also need to figure out how you will accept payment on your website. If you want to accept credit cards, which you should, then you will need a payment gateway. The most popular would be PayPal Pro and Authorize.net. You will need to apply for an account.

Of course, there is the ultimate DYI approach, where you can not only design your own website, but also code your own shopping cart. If this is the case, then I highly doubt you need to read this section of my tutorial.

5. Make Business Cards

Yes, I actually made this an individual step because you will need a business card to register for trade shows, as well as deal with suppliers. Since you are also working on your website design, it is also more efficient to work on a business card design. Additionally, you need some lead time because printers will charge you extra to expedite printing and shipping. So, if you plan ahead, you can save quite a bit of money.

6. Apply for a business license in your city

Once again, if your city has website dedicated to business, then you should be able to download an application for a business license. In some cities, you can even apply for a home-based business license. Of course, only fill out a home-based business license if that is your case. Bring or even possibly mail your completed application and filing fee to the appropriate location. The reason I put this step after designing your website is because the business license fee is a yearly fee and so why pay when you are not even close to launching your website.

7. Apply for a Seller’s Permit

At this point, you should be fairly proficient at filing out forms. The last application you should have to file is for your seller’s permit, sometimes mistakenly called a resale license. The seller’s permit will allow you to buy from your wholesalers without paying sales tax, but it also requires you to pay the sales tax on any items sold, within your state, every quarter. Of course, in modern commerce, you are allowed to collect the sales tax from your customers.

8. Figure out how you are going to display your products

Before you actually source your products, I believe it is wise to first figure out how you are going to display your products on your website. Are you going to use a mannequin, model, or just lay it flat. Will you outsource your product photography or do it right in your bedroom, which is how we first started. If you are going to do it yourself, then you still need to make sure it fits your budget and business plan as far as purchasing equipment. If you are going to need equipment, then now is the time to either jump online or go out and start making a real investment in your business.

9. Plan your product mix and find suppliers

While you are figuring out how you will ultimate display your products, you will want to start researching where you will buy your products. If you haven’t done so, then you will want to start thinking more about your product mix. Of course, it needs to fit perfectly with your business plan, concept, and budget you already established in step 1. Fashion buying is another topic completely and I highly suggest you read up on it if you can.

After you have some kind of buying plan, it’s time to find suppliers. If you are lucky, then you will be able to catch the MAGIC Marketplace trade show in Las Vegas. They have vendors for vintage inspired clothing, juniors clothing, indie clothing, etc. It is essentially the largest fashion trade show in the USA and maybe the world. If you cannot find suppliers at MAGIC, then I would honestly be surprised. If you cannot wait for the bi-annual trade show, then you are most likely going to need to take a trip to the Los Angeles Fashion District. If you are looking for the glamorous world of designer labels, then you will be spending your time at “The Intersection.” At this intersection you will find the California Market Center, Cooper Design Space, Gerry Building, and The New Mart. Here you can find brands such as A.B.S. By Allen Schwartz, BCBG, and Betsey Johnson. If you are in this market, then be sure to bring copies of your business license, business card, and seller’s license. Also, as an online business, be prepared to be rejected by many showrooms. If you’re like me though, then it should only inspire you to be more successful so that when the time comes you can reject them.

If your price point is a lot lower, then you are going to really want to spend time around the San Pedro Mart area. You will probably find that 80-90% of these wholesalers are not right for your target market, but that only means that you should find 10%-20% that is right and will be able to focus on building those relationships into the future.

Of course, you can always turn to the internet, registering with sites like fashiongo and lashowroom. Additionally, you can contact individual brand sales reps and they should send you line sheets and look books. In fact, this is how most business will be later in the future, but I suggest you visit trade shows and marts to get your feet a little wet.

10. Start product photography and adding content to your website

Since you should have planned earlier for product photography, this step should be self explanatory. You want to add the products to your website and get it ready for a more official launch.

11. Start your marketing campaign, Search Engine Optimization campaign, and PR campaign

Again, these campaigns should have already been planned in the first step. This step is pretty much a hundred different subjects on its own and so I will not really dive to deep into it. The most rudimentary start would be to submit your site to search engines, such as Google and Yahoo!, sign up for Google AdWords, and start a Facebook and Twitter account. There is probably a good chance that will have to depend on paid advertising to get decent traffic at the beginning, but I highly suggest you plan and budget appropriately.

It might take one day or a whole month, but you’re going to get your first order and at that point you can finally say you really set-up your online clothing store.

Let’s say that you’ve met the demographic criteria of the example mentioned earlier. The next set of questions is to narrow down that demographic to a specific group of people. For example, this study may only target Hispanic males, aged 18-25, living in Washington, DC, that use public transportation. Only the participants within this group will qualify to complete the study.

The qualification portion is the most important part of the study for participants. Your answers here will determine if you qualify to complete the entire study. In some instances, you will just not qualify for the survey. But, in some instances, you can disqualify yourself from the study by incorrectly answering the qualification questions. As research organizations strategically develop survey questions, you should strategically answers these questions. In the following examples, we will look at some sample survey topics and qualification questions for the different types of surveys that we mentioned earlier.

  • Topic: A new alcoholic beverage that will soon be on the market. You may asked the following qualification question: Have you consumed an alcoholic beverage in the past 12 months? This study is looking for respondents that consume alcohol. If you answer no, you may be disqualified. If you do not drink alcohol, you can not give your opinion of the new alcoholic beverage. (Tip: You should answer yes, even if you only consume alcohol on special occasions.) Answering yes will qualify you to continue with the study.
  • Topic: A healthcare service. A qualification question may ask if you would consider using the internet for health related activities. This study is looking for respondents to give opinions of an online healthcare service. If you indicate that you would not use the internet for health related activities, you will be disqualified. Your answer indicates that you have no interest in the topic. (Tip: A willingness to try something different, often qualifies you to complete the session.)
  • Topic: A health condition. These are the most difficult surveys for panelist to qualify to complete. One sample question will provide a long list of health conditions, and ask if you have ever suffered from, or been diagnosed with any of the conditions. This study is looking for respondents that suffer from particular health condition(s). You may not qualify for the survey if you do not click on any of the conditions. In addition, you may not qualify if you do not click on the condition(s) that will be discussed. (Tip: Click on as many health conditions as apply to you, even if you have not suffered from a particular condition in a long time. Keep in mind that the question asks if you have ever suffered from any of the health conditions.
  • Topic: A new DVD release. A qualification question may ask you to indicate the last time you purchased a new DVD. You are given the options of clicking 1 month; 3 month; 6 months; and 12 months. This question is asked to determine if you purchase DVD’s on a regular basis. If you click 6 or 12 months, you may be disqualified from the study. This answer indicates that you do not purchase DVD’s on a regular basis. Clicking the 1 month or 3 month options will likely qualify you to continue the study. (Tip: When answering questions that give you a range of options to select, it is best to stay within the middle.)

Elimination Questions

  • Topic: A skin care product. An elimination question for this type of study may be: Which of these products would you never consider using? It will give you a list of products and ask you to click the ones that you will not use. If you indicate that you will never use a product, you will be disqualified. The study will ask you to compare similar products to determine if you prefer one product over another. (Tip: Flexibility is the most important characteristic of a panelist. You will likely qualify for more surveys if you remember to “never say never.”)
  • Topic: An upcoming presidential election. You may be asked the following elimination question: Have you made up your mind about which presidential candidate you will vote for? This survey is to determine if you will change your vote after learning more about the candidates. If you indicate that you have decided on a candidate, you may be disqualified. It would serve no purpose for you to continue the study. (Tip: Open mindedness will open the door to more survey invitations.)

Generally, once participants have passed the qualification portion of the study, they are eligible to complete the entire study. However, if you are disqualified from a study after you’ve spent 20 minutes or more answering questions, or the survey window simply goes blank with no explanation at all, this is an indication that the site is a scam. These sites are only out to gather information, and the information that you provide will be used to spam your email.

Generating income from taking surveys requires patience. You will start earning money right away, but it may be several weeks or even months before you receive it. The key to generating residual income from taking surveys is to regularly complete surveys to build up your account balances. Most panels require that you have a specified minimum balance in your account before you can cash out. You will soon start receiving checks in the mail, and deposits into your PayPal account on a continuous basis.

How To Use "Fear Of Loss" Selling With Finesse, In Network Marketing

So many times sales people are taught to use “fear of loss selling” in network marketing, and using “take aways” to pressure people into signing up in their business, or buying their product. One of the best sales training tips I have learned, is how to use fear of loss selling as a last resort. I will show you how to sell, so that you won’t need to use fear of loss selling, or focusing on the close. In fact, your prospects will be begging to buy from you.

It’s true of just about any sales profession for that matter, fear of loss can be a powerful selling tool. That’s because no one likes to have something taken away from them. There is a right way and a wrong way to do this. First I want to talk about the wrong way. Prospecting doesn’t have to be a daunting task.

The wrong way to use fear of loss, is to assume your customer really wants your product in the first place. Cheesy sales pitches are just what you want to avoid. Avoid saying things like: “You won’t believe this great deal I have for you today”. Or pressure them with a statement like, “It’s only this price this month, after next month, the price goes up. The customer does not care, if it does not solve their problem. That’s what you have to do next, is find out the problem.

Continually ask questions to your prospect, find out what their hot button is, then simply press it. In so doing, you will be adding value to yourself, and your company. Remember, people buy you, not your company, product, or service. If you make them feel good, and they like you, they will buy with their emotional attachment to you.

The simple fact of the matter is, if you continually take the attention off yourself, and your business, and listen to your prospect’s needs. It’s very important to take the dollar sign off your prospect’s forehead. When you stop worrying about how much money you are going to make, and focus on the needs of the customer, it goes much smoother.

Establish rapport, ask questions. Ask them what the situation is, find out what the problem is. What can I do for you, the customer? You should have confidence in yourself and your product, but never assume that they will want to be in business with you, as they may not want to build a home based business at all. They might want your products if it meets their needs, and it’s easy find out what they are, with these common qualifiers.

Ask them about their work, what do they do?, do they enjoy the job? If they do, that’s great, people who enjoy their jobs are usually better prospects, because they exude confidence, and are not afraid of working.

Also be sure not to give your prospect too much information at your first meeting. Your goal on the first meeting, is not to book a meeting, but rather to peak their curiosity about what you do. You should be focused on getting their contact information, (unless it’s someone you already have their contact info). If you just met them, exchange cards at the end of the conversation. I usually don’t even mention my business, unless they ask me. I spend most of the time listening to them, and most of the talking I do, is asking them questions. Any good sales person will tell you, that if you listen more, and talk less, you will sell more, and pitch less. There is a right time and a wrong time to pitch. Wait until you have enough information from the customer, and you know what their hot button is.

You need to get permission to market to them, conversing and listening more than you talk is a great way to do this. Always get the person’s name right away, and say their name back to them. People like to hear you say their name, it establishes rapport and propels the engagement of the conversation.

I will give you an example of a conversation I had with a waiter one time. I told him that he did a very nice job serving my girlfriend and I, and I asked him this question. “You seem like you really enjoy working here Michael, how long have you worked here?” He said, “Two months”. I said wow, two months, and you serve like an old pro!” Do you enjoy working here? “Yeah, so far” he said. I said; “Great, do you ever look for ways to make extra money on the internet?” He said, “sure”. “Well here’s my card, with the website address on it, to get more information.” He said thanks, and I left him a nice tip. The conversation wasn’t long, and all I did was give him my card. I also had the number of the restaurant, and the guy’s name was on my receipt. So I could have always called back later and ask him if had been to the website.

Well guess what happened to the waiter? He came to my web site, he signed up for my newsletter, and he signed up for my business. The price never was an issue, I never got a single objection. The best way to handle objections is not to get any. Because I cared about his needs and wants, instead of worrying about signing him up for my business, he was more receptive to me. It puts you in a powerful position, and you can use this technique even if you are brand new to selling, it just takes a little practice to get really good at it.

When should the price become and issue? Price should not even come up until the end. It’s the major mistake sales people make is mentioning the price. Adding value first is the key, and I’m not talking about blathering on about how much money they can make in your business. People don’t care how much money can be made, if it’s a worthless product you are selling. If the products your company has are something you would still be buying, even if you weren’t making any money, then you have good products.

Be honest with yourself, and your prospects. If you don’t feel your products have any value, then don’t pretend, or try to fake it. Most people will know instantly that you are not being sincere.

Fear of loss comes in if the person is putting up buying resistance signals. You can always use this one fear of loss statement, and you can tailor this to your prospect. Say something like: “Well maybe it’s not for you, it’s not for everyone.” After you say that, don’t say anything else. The person will either say, “no I don’t think it’s for me”, or “well, maybe I should find out more.” No matter what they say, agree with them, when they are ready to buy, they will tell you. Then all you do is take their order, and continue to develop a relationship with them. It’s all about how you educate your prospects, and treating them like you want to be treated.
